Former British Crown colony in SE China. Hong- Kong Island , a haven for pirates and opium smugglers, was occupied by the British during the Opium War from 1839 to 1842 and was ceded to Great Britain by the Treaty of Nanking (Nanjing) in 1842. Kowloon peninsula was added to the colony after the Peking Convention of 1860, and the New Territories were leased from China for 99 years to Great Britain in 1898. The British developed the colony as a commercial area and naval base. The port of Victoria became one of the best in the world, and Hong Kong dominated East-West trade in southern China. Japan occupied it during World War II from 1941 to 1945. Great Britain regained it after the war. After the Chinese communist takeover on the mainland , it became a haven for refugees from there. It is now a major trading, communications, manufacturing, and financial center. In 1997 China regained sovereignty over Hong Kong, but Hong Kong continued to be a center of trade and commerce under then premier Deng Xiaopeng’s “one country, two systems” policies.

The hustle and bustle of Hong Kong is the stuff of legends. From the minute you step off the plane you will be assaulted by sights and sounds that are utterly confusing and fascinating all at the same time.

Of course eating here is an activity in itself and visiting one of the many fine restaurants or small street stalls selling local delicacies is an exciting part of a visit to Hong Kong.

ChungKing Mansions is often avoided by people due to it’s reputation of sordid goings on but it is an adventure in itself and most likely will become a highlight of your trip. It is noisy, loud and smells amazing due food being sold by people from every nation. You will be accosted by touts trying to sell fake Rolexes, cameras, change your money or get you to eat at their restaurant. It is an amazing experience.

Sai Kung is place often missed by visitors. This fishing village is a haven with it’s beautiful beaches and it’s many options for hiking. It is a great place for those prefer to be away from the noise of the city.

The Ladies Market in Mongkok is a shopaholics paradise and not just for ladies. From the latest fashions to cheap knock offs, you can find anything your heart desires, just remember to bargain the price down. You can trawl the stalls for hours and then stop for a snack at one of the many eateries that line the streets nearby.

The Star Ferry is one of the cheapest things to do and is a great way to get out onto the famous harbour. Try to get a ferry at night as you will be able to photograph the stunning Symphony of Lights which is legendary worldwide.
